About me
I’m Ben! I’m a BYU biology student who loves science, nature, and helping others learn. I’ve been a writing consultant, museum educator, and researcher. I believe that learning is not only important, but that it can be one of the most joyful parts of life!
Unfortunately, many students are constrained by systems that don’t fully meet their needs. As a result, learning can become frustrating and anxiety-inducing. I know what it’s like to struggle in school. As someone with ADHD, studying hasn’t always come naturally to me. I’ve had to develop strategies to stay organized, focused, and motivated. Those hard-earned lessons now shape how I coach students: with patience, encouragement, and practical tools that make learning feel manageable and even enjoyable.
My Experience
I have always enjoyed learning and teaching about a wide variety of subjects. My greatest interest is Biology, but as the child of an English teacher and a librarian, reading and writing were also a foundational part of my childhood.
I studied hard in high school, passing five AP classes, and getting a 32 on the ACT with a 35 on the science section. After serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Washington State, I began studying Biology at Brigham Young University.
I’ve taken time to work as an education lead at Thanksgiving Point, where I taught summer camps and makerspace classes, as well as living my dream of getting paid to tell people about dinosaurs.
I spent a semester abroad as a paid research intern at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in the Netherlands. While there I conducted research on the evolution and biogeography of dragonflies, and ate way too many pastries.
I’ve also worked as a writing consultant at the BYU writing center and a Teaching assistant.
My Tutoring Philosophy
I help students succeed by:
Building a relationship with each student based on patience, encouragement, and enthusiasm.
Using games, activities, and inquiry to promote active learning.
Helping students build confidence and find meaning in their academic journey.
